Saving Wells and Solving Stains in Wisconsin
Overview:
- Issue: High manganese levels caused staining; copper exceedances in the distribution system
- Solution: Introduced a polyphosphate blend for sequestration and corrosion control
- Results: No staining issues and copper levels stabilized within 6 months
- Collaboration: Worked closely with Wisconsin DNR to approve and implement optimal chemistry
Location: Surface Water Plant – Wisconsin
A surface water treatment plant in Wisconsin was at risk of losing valuable well capacity on an island in the Mississippi River. The Wisconsin DNR had informed the city that unless the unused wells were brought into service, they would need to be permanently capped.
The city wanted to preserve this water source but had long avoided using the wells due to elevated manganese levels that caused customer complaints about staining. On top of that, the distribution system was also experiencing elevated copper levels—creating a dual challenge that required a comprehensive solution.
Customized Chemistry, Practical Results
Aqua-Pure Inc. was called in to assess the situation and develop a treatment strategy. We proposed feeding a polyphosphate blend designed to sequester iron and manganese while also providing corrosion control for copper within the distribution system.
Initially, the Wisconsin DNR preferred the use of orthophosphate for corrosion control. However, we presented a strong technical case against this approach—explaining that orthophosphate could bind with iron and manganese, potentially worsening the situation by creating buildup and instability in the distribution system.
After receiving approval to move forward with the polyphosphate blend, the treatment was implemented. Within six months, the city saw a full resolution of the copper exceedance issue and elimination of manganese-related staining. The island wells were successfully brought back into service—preserving system capacity and improving water quality across the board.
